Unalakleet FUDS Remedial Action

Unalakleet Fuds Remedial Action

Description

Bethel was awarded an 8(a) sole source contract to conduct a Remedial Action at the Unalakleet Air Force Station, Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS). This was based on our experience and performance on various task orders for our Environmental Remediation Services IDIQ Contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District. Contaminated soil was excavated and shipped off site in 2010 and 2011. However, soil contaminated at concentrations above cleanup levels remained in the area. Bethel was contracted to excavate, remove, and dispose of up to 2,600 tons of additional soil in 2012. Having worked previously on the site, Bethel found an innovative and cost-efficient field methodology to reduce field execution time and improve worker safety on this contract. The original 1-cubic yard supersack filling operation was modified to a 5-cubic yard approach cutting field time in half. The use of a powerscreen with a conveyor system also reduced overhead hazards encountered by laborers during the supersack filling operation. The excavated soil was loaded into approved waste containers, transported to a barge landing facility and ultimately “loaded out” onto multiple barges through a combination of beach landings and lightering operations at sea. It was then transported to the Port of Seattle and on to permitted disposal facilities in the Lower 48. The USACE, Alaska District awarded Bethel the 2012 annual Safety Award for the performance of this project.
