Bethel performed nearly all the field activities for the three principal scope elements of this project, described below.
Interim Removal Action of POL Soil
- Delineated and excavated 8,700 CY of contaminated soil associated with former underground storage tanks and a ruptured fuel distribution line
- Used several field screening methods to efficiently guide excavation to maximize removal of the most highly impacted soil
- Worked closely with FAA, the Galena Airport, and BLM to obtain Right of Access permits to work safely and efficiently alongside an active airway
Landfarm Expansion and O&M
- Doubled capacity of an existing landfarm by lengthening the containment berm and modifying decontamination area to accommodate the new configuration
- Collected multi-incremental samples to establish baseline contaminant concentrations and evaluate the efficacy of subsequent treatment
- Tilled landfarm soils to enhance biodegradation and volatilization; monitored soils for performance parameters
SVE Soil Remediation
- Designed, constructed, and operated SVE system to treat TCE- and POLcontaminated soil
- Collected baseline and progress soil samples to document system efficacy; sampling showed a significant reduction of contamination.
- Instituted aggressive measures such as pile turning and controlled cover removal to enhance contaminant reduction
