Galena Interim Removal Action and Landfarm Expansion

INTERIM REMOVAL ACTION AND LANDFARM EXPANSION

Description

Bethel performed nearly all the field activities for the three principal scope elements of this project, described below.

Interim Removal Action of POL Soil

  • Delineated and excavated 8,700 CY of contaminated soil associated with former underground storage tanks and a ruptured fuel distribution line
  • Used several field screening methods to efficiently guide excavation to maximize removal of the most highly impacted soil
  • Worked closely with FAA, the Galena Airport, and BLM to obtain Right of Access permits to work safely and efficiently alongside an active airway

Landfarm Expansion and O&M

  • Doubled capacity of an existing landfarm by lengthening the containment berm and modifying decontamination area to accommodate the new configuration
  • Collected multi-incremental samples to establish baseline contaminant concentrations and evaluate the efficacy of subsequent treatment
  • Tilled landfarm soils to enhance biodegradation and volatilization; monitored soils for performance parameters

SVE Soil Remediation

  • Designed, constructed, and operated SVE system to treat TCE- and POLcontaminated soil
  • Collected baseline and progress soil samples to document system efficacy; sampling showed a significant reduction of contamination.
  • Instituted aggressive measures such as pile turning and controlled cover removal to enhance contaminant reduction
