Description
Bethel was tasked with constructing a community of 26 family housing units, including roads, utilities, and recreational facilities for the U.S. Coast Guard in Cordova, Alaska. The project included a total of over 60,000 SF of new construction and involved site-clearing on the side of a mountain, site development, and construction on a small parcel of land with challenging topography.
Phase I involved construction of the new units while accommodating USCG families currently living in old housing in the immediate area. Phase II involved abating and demolishing the old housing after the families had relocated to the newly constructed homes. Site amenities included a playground shelter and equipment, an exterior playground area, and a handicapped accessible ramp to the existing community building.
This project was a Design-Assist contract. Bethel worked closely with the USCG’s designer during the preconstruction phase of the project. That collaboration yielded significant alternative construction options presented by Bethel that were accepted by the USCG. These solutions addressed the weather degradation of the units (and subsequent mold/mildew) while under construction due to Cordova’s intense rain and snow seasons. Bethel devised a program that used panelized wall sections within a controlled-environment facility, and a phased delivery schedule to the site. The panelized wall sections were then put in place and protected from the elements during construction.
