Description
Provided design-build services to repair deteriorated and termite damaged mezzanine and ground floor rooms; remove hazardous material and decommission the existing hyperbaric chamber. Work included the installation of fire rated exits & stairways, fire alarm with a mass notification system, a new sprinkler system, a central AC system, electrical system upgrades and reconstruction of the flyaway dive locker area. All work was conducted in an occupied building where mission criticality took priority over the construction activities. Bethel worked closely with the Mobile Dive Salvage Unit 1 personnel to stream line construction with minimal impacts to the MDSU1 mission readiness.
The project guidelines dictated keeping the building exterior looks as close to the original as possible while replacing damaged windows and siding, as well as other prominent features that had historic significance. The existing wood framed mezzanine and lean-to were too heavily damaged by termites to repair, so Bethel replaced the mezzanine and lean-to with a steel structure designed to match the existing, also to preserve the historic appearance of the building.
The new construction inside the existing building shell required a complex foundation system which required installing micro piles at some of the existing column locations as well as at all of the new column locations to support the two story structure inside the building.
