Description
Construction of a two story replacement school and utility building, approximately 48,500 sf; construction of utilities infrastructure including water storage, water & sewer connections, power, generator & fuel, driveways, and utility service disconnects and re-connects. The project includes hazardous material abatement involved with demolition of existing site structures, BIA school and tanks. The main building is comprises of wood trusses on a steel frame with driven steel pipe piles. The floors consist of steel pan-deck with concrete infill. The walls and roof are SIPs with metal siding and roofing.
Bethel successfully bid and won this project to perform one of largest concrete pours in rural Alaska in many years. Bethel owns concrete delivery trucks and concrete pumps from previous projects and invested in a batch plant for this project. We employed a concrete specialist to assist in the design of the concrete mix, and assist in the testing of the concrete. The purchase of a batch plant and mobilization of our team to batch, place, and finish the concrete ahead of schedule. The performance based specification allowed our team total control over the concrete process and allowed our company to add to the skill-sets of our local employees. This level of control allowed Bethel to deliver the final concrete pour 4 weeks ahead of schedule.
The Structurally Insulated Panels on this project was also self-performed by Bethel. Bethel had the innovative idea to change the process of building the framed openings in the panel factory rather than on-site which is typically done. This innovation resulted in an increase in panel installation from 8 panels a day to 20 panels a day. Our success on projects is directly linked to our ability to adapt where needed to achieve the Owners goals of building on time and on budget and by relying on our in-house resources and local knowledge of Bush Alaska to develop a winning construction plan.
